Rock with Crystals Growing on its side, 17 ozs, Arizona 1972

I recently attended an estate sale where I purchased a small tub of various rock and mineral specimens. I bought these because I thought they were so pretty, but have since decided I just don't have room for them. Problem is, I don't know the first thing about rocks and minerals….. like I said, I just thought they were pretty.

So now, I have these and figure I'd sell them. So I go off to a local used book store and purchased 9 different books to aid in describing my treasures. But I can't even pronounce 95 percent of the names in these books, so that leaves me with trying to match what I have to pictures. What I'm trying to say is that I cannot guarantee to you that I have the right name with the right specimen. I'll have to describe these to the best of my ability, so here goes….

At first glance, I thought this was just a big rock. Then I turned it over and saw the crystals growing on the side. I have to say at this point, that I believe these are crystals but I'm using one of the books for reference and am not a rock expert at any means. The entire piece weighs right around 17 ounces. When I received this, it was in a baggie and had a piece of paper that said 'from Arizona, 1972'.

Of what I can see, there are six crystals about the size of raisins. They seem to be growing together. There are some crevices on this rock, and shining my pen light into the crevices I see a few more smaller crystals imbedded inside. Anywhere that there is a crevice it is very sparkly inside, almost like someone sprinkled sugar on it. What I found interesting while reading one of the reference books was that it said if these rocks are cracked open that there is usually more crystals inside and possibly other minerals. I'm itching to break this open but so far I've refrained.

That's about all I can tell you. I've tried to describe this piece to the best of my ability using the reference books as guides. If I can answer any other questions shoot me an email.
